Black Adam' Retains Top Position

"Black Adam," the Dwayne Johnson-starring DC superhero film, remained at the top of the North American box office in its second weekend. According to studio estimates, "Black Adam" added $27.7 million in ticket sales, bringing its domestic total to $111.1 million, despite being down 59% from its debut and facing little new competition.

Johnson spent a decade trying to bring the character to the big screen and has plans for future Superman films. But, despite earning $250 million worldwide, the future of "Black Adam" is unknown. The Warner Bros. film cost $200 million, not including marketing and promotion costs, and a sequel has not been officially approved.

But big changes are afoot at DC, which has just announced a new leadership team led by Peter Safran and James Gunn, both of whom have a well-documented fondness for promoting obscure comic book characters. On Sunday, Johnson sent a message to his 344 million Instagram followers, announcing the end of the world press tour and thanking those who worked behind the scenes to launch "our NEW DC FRANCHISE known as BLACK ADAM."
