Zelensky makes his first trip to the United States since the war began.

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Wednesday that he was traveling to the United States to meet with Vice President Joe Biden.

It will be his first trip abroad since Russia invaded Ukraine in February.

Zelensky will speak to Congress and attend a number of meetings in the United States.

The White House has also confirmed the trip and stated that it will provide Ukraine with a Patriot missile battery to improve the country's air defense capabilities.

"On my way to the US to strengthen Ukraine's resilience and defense capabilities," he tweeted.

Zelensky hosts foreign leaders in Kyiv on a regular basis and has visited troops across Ukraine.

The Ukrainian president has also made frequent phone and video calls to world leaders, often from his office in Kyiv.

His surprise visit to a foreign country, however, is a first since the war began and underscores the importance of Ukraine's relationship with the US, which has played a key role in providing military support.
