President Buhari has unveiled new Naira notes.

President Muhammadu Buhari unveiled the new currency notes before the federal executive council (FEC) meeting at the state house in Abuja on Wednesday morning.

Godwin Emefiele, Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), was present at the unveiling ceremony.

Meanwhile, at a press conference following the ceremony before the Federal Executive Council meeting, the CBN governor refuted claims that the early release of new notes is a strategy to target any Nigerian.

Mr Emefiele reminded the public that there is no need to keep such information alive.

According to him, the CBN will step up its monitoring and investigate the withdrawal process.

He maintained that there will be strict limits on the amount of cash that people can withdraw over the counter, as the bank collaborates with the EFCC to monitor the purpose of any large transactions.

He claims that the redesigned currency note can never be counterfeited, and that the CBN redesigns the notes every five to eight years to prevent this from happening.

Following the unveiling of the new note, which goes into circulation today, the CBN governor stated that the CBN is now more determined than ever to make Nigeria a cashless economy, as it is in other parts of the world.
