Brazilian icon died at the age of 82.
Pele, a soccer legend, died at the age of 82.
On October 23, 1940, 'O Rei' was born in Tres Coracoes, Brazil.
The three-time World Cup winner had been suffering from health problems for some time before being admitted to the hospital in early December.
"He is quite fragile in terms of mobility," his son Edinho said in early February to Globoesporte.
"He had a hip transplant but did not receive adequate rehabilitation. So he has this mobility issue, which eventually leads to depression."
Pele will be remembered for his great moments, goals, and, of course, titles throughout his career.
He scored his 1,000th goal for Santos against Vasco da Gama on November 19, 1969.
Waldemar de Brito: This boy is going to be the best football player in the world Pele made his debut for Santos at the age of 15 against Cubatao on September 7, 1956, and scored a goal.
Less than a year later, the teen made his debut for the Brazilian national team.
He scored again on July 7, 1957, against Argentina at the Maracana. However, his goal was insufficient for the Selecao to win the match, and they were defeated 2-1.
The Brazilian legend featured for Santos between 1956 and 1974, netting a momentous 1,087 goals in 1,118 matches and winning numerous titles.
"This boy is going to be the best football player in the world," said Pele's discoverer, Waldemar de Brito.
Pele made his World Cup debut at the age of 17 in 1958, becoming the youngest player ever to win the trophy. In the final, Brazil defeated Sweden 5-2, with Pele scoring a brace.
Four years later, Pele competed in his second World Cup, which Brazil also won.
Despite this, he was limited to just two games due to a groin strain.
Brazil missed out on the trophy in 1966, but Pele led them to victory four years later in Mexico, when the Selecao defeated Italy.
On July 18, 1971, Pele played his final match for Brazil against Yugoslavia.
In 2013, he was awarded the honorary Ballon d'Or for his distinguished career.
